US Air Force & US Army Test Phone App that Detects UAS

U.S. Army Central’s Task Force 39, the team dedicated to developing innovative ideas throughout USARCENT, facilitated a test of CARPE Dronvm at McEntire Joint National Guard Base and Poinsett Range on July 18, 2023.

CARPE Dronvm is a DoD funded application developed by MITRE Corporation that uses crowd-sourced information to detect unmanned ariel systems, or UAS. This test used a version of the application on cell phones to detect a UAS. Maj. Travis Valley, the Task Force 39 operations officer, said the potential for crowd-sourced UAS detection increases force protection capabilities.

“This CARPE Dronvm test is the largest live test conducted to date,” said Valley. “CARPE Dronvm has the potential to provide real time, crowd-sourced data about small, unmanned aerial vehicles to military decisions makers around the globe. Using CD, we can increase our detection capabilities and our ability to protect Soldiers on the future battlefield.”

During the test, Soldiers used government provided cellular devices to test the functionality and capability of the application by capturing images of a UAS. The UAS used in the test flew from McEntire JNGB to Poinsett Range to provide the maximum amount of testing space available.

CARPE Dronvm is the result of a U.S. Air Forces Central initiative to develop systems to detect UAS. U.S. Army Central is testing the ability to operate this application at the Soldier level.

In recent years, the threat posed by UAS increased as malign regional actors continue to use and experiment with this relatively cheap weapons system. Due to its low cost to entry, it is becoming the weapon of choice for potential adversaries resulting in rapid technology proliferation and increased employment. Lt. Gen. Patrick Frank, the USARCENT Commanding General said his command is focused on developing technologies to counter this threat.

“The UAS threat is a shared security challenge for the U.S. and our regional partners,” said Frank. “To combat this threat, CENTCOM and USARCENT will test and field counter-UAS systems. The advanced measures we intend to pursue regarding innovation and experimentation will provide critical, real-time data to inform Army and Defense decisions on counter-UAS technologies.”

DJI, the global front-runner in civilian drone and aerial imaging technology, is renowned for its innovative product range. The company’s Mini series, in particular, has gained immense popularity among drone enthusiasts for its compactness, affordability, and advanced features. The DJI Mini 3 Pro, launched in May 2022, further elevated the reputation of the series with impressive features such as a large 1/1.3-inch image sensor, 4K HDR video recording capability, 34 minutes of flight time, intelligent flight modes, and obstacle avoidance technology. Given the success and demand for these small yet powerful drones, the upcoming DJI Mini 4 release date is eagerly awaited.

DJI Mini 4 Release Date

When Will The DJI Mini 4 Be Released? There is much anticipation and speculation about the release date of the DJI Mini 4. Although some hope for a launch later this year, the absence of any leaked images or design concepts, usually seen a few months before a DJI drone release, makes it unlikely. DJI’s release schedule is unpredictable; the DJI Air 2S was launched in April 2021, with the Air 3 potentially launching two years later.

Similarly, the Inspire 2 was released in 2016, and the DJI Inspire 3 was just recently released, nearly 7 years later. As for the Phantom series, the future remains uncertain since the Phantom 4’s release seven years ago. However, considering the DJI Mini series’ popularity, it is highly probable that the Mini 4 is in the works and could be released in early to mid-2024.

DJI Mini 4 – Expected Upgrades

The Mini 4 will undoubtedly showcase a number of enhancements over the already impressive Mini 3 Pro. Some of the expected upgrades include:

Enhanced Camera Capabilities

The camera system of the DJI Mini 4 is anticipated to carry significant improvements over its predecessor, potentially changing the landscape for lightweight consumer drones. While the Mini 3 Pro was equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor, the Mini 4 is speculated to host a larger 1-inch sensor. The implications of this upgrade are substantial, with improved image quality, superior low-light performance, and potentially even high-resolution video recording capabilities.

The larger 1-inch sensor would enable the Mini 4 to capture more light and detail, resulting in superior image and video quality. In addition to the better imaging capability, the Mini 4 might come equipped with an adjustable or larger aperture. This would allow photographers more control over depth of field, enhancing the ability to achieve professional-grade results in various lighting conditions.

In terms of video recording capabilities, the potential inclusion of a 1-inch sensor could pave the way for 5K video recording at 30fps. This would be a significant step up from the 4K video capabilities of the Mini 3 Pro, offering users a chance to capture more detailed and cinematic footage.

Furthermore, there is speculation that the Mini 4 might come with a 10-bit colour profile. This would allow for a higher dynamic range and better colour reproduction, allowing videographers to capture true-to-life colours and exceptional details in their footage.

However, fitting a 1-inch sensor onto a sub-250g drone presents considerable engineering challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining balance and power efficiency. This type of upgrade could require a redesign of the drone’s architecture while also needing advances in heat management and battery efficiency to accommodate the power-hungry larger sensor.

Yet, if any company is up to the task, it is DJI. Their proven track record in technological innovation and their ability to push the boundaries of what’s possible in drone technology mean that this potential upgrade cannot be ruled out. Despite the challenges, it is conceivable that DJI could develop a compact drone with a 1-inch sensor, continuing to revolutionise the drone market.

In summary, the DJI Mini 4’s potential camera upgrades offer tantalising possibilities for consumer drones. If these predictions hold true, the Mini 4 could allow even amateur drone users to capture professional-grade, high-resolution images and videos in a range of lighting conditions and settings. This would set a new benchmark for what is achievable in the realm of lightweight, consumer-friendly drones.

DJI Mini 4 – Improved Image Transmission Range

A key area of improvement is set to be the drone’s transmission range. The Mini 3 Pro already boasts an impressive range of 12km, courtesy of DJI’s OcuSync 3.0 transmission technology. However, the Mini 4 is likely to exceed this benchmark by several km. Reports suggest that the next-gen drone may feature the upgraded OcuSync 3.0+ technology or potentially even the rumoured OcuSync 4.0. Such enhancements in the transmission technology will not only extend the drone’s operational range but also improve its reliability, enabling drone enthusiasts and professionals to undertake more adventurous and challenging aerial missions with greater confidence and precision.

Advanced Obstacle Avoidance System

A key area of enhancement for the DJI Mini 4 lies within its obstacle avoidance system. The Mini 4 is expected to elevate its navigational safety features beyond the capabilities of the Mini 3 Pro, offering either wider binocular vision sensors or an increased number of sensors for expanded coverage and range.

The Mini 3 Pro’s three-way obstacle avoidance system was a breakthrough for sub-250g drones, but DJI is expected to go a step further with the Mini 4.

It is speculated that the Mini 4 will incorporate multi-directional sensors, enhancing protection from four directions instead of the Mini 3 Pro’s three. These upgrades may encompass front, back, bottom, and lateral coverage for the first time in DJI’s Mini series.

This incorporation of side sensors would significantly improve the drone’s situational awareness, providing a safer flying experience, especially when navigating tight or complex environments. Wider sensors could also provide coverage on top, offering full 360-degree obstacle detection and avoidance, a feature usually seen only in high-end professional drone models.

An enhanced obstacle avoidance system not only increases the safety of drone operation but also expands the drone’s ability to execute more complex flight paths and automated filming modes. Whether flying manually or using the advanced autonomous modes, users would be able to capture their desired shots with greater confidence, knowing that their drone is equipped to avoid potential hazards from all directions.

Improved Transmission Range and Flight Time Using OcuSync 3.0, the Mini 3 Pro can transmit over a range of 12km. However, the Mini 4 might come with OcuSync 3.0+, extending the range to approximately 15km. This would allow for longer and more ambitious flights while maintaining clear image transmission.

DJI Mini  4 Intelligent Flight Modes

The DJI Mini 4 is anticipated to continue and enhance the legacy of its predecessor’s intelligent flight modes. Building upon the capabilities of the Mini 3 Pro, the Mini 4 is expected to deliver upgraded versions of Active Track, Point of Interest, Spotlight, and Return to Home functions, providing users with the ability to create even more engaging and dynamic aerial footage.

The Active Track feature, which allows the drone to follow and film a moving subject automatically, may see improvements in terms of tracking accuracy and response speed. These advancements allow users to capture smooth and cinematic footage of fast-moving subjects more easily and precisely.

Similarly, the Point of Interest mode, which automates flight paths around a specific subject, could be enhanced to offer more intricate and diverse flight patterns. This would enable users to create stunning, professional-grade panoramic videos without needing expert piloting skills.

The Spotlight function, designed to keep the camera focused on a subject while the drone flies freely, is another feature likely to see an upgrade. With enhanced object recognition and tracking algorithms, the Mini 4 could provide more reliable and consistent focus on the subject, resulting in smoother and more professional-looking footage.

Finally, the Return to Home function, which automatically guides the drone back to its takeoff point, may see improvements in navigation accuracy and obstacle avoidance, providing users with an added layer of safety.

With the DJI Mini 4, users can expect a host of improved intelligent flight modes. These upgrades promise to not only simplify the flying experience but also to expand creative possibilities for capturing dynamic aerial videos.

How Much Will The DJI Mini 4 Cost?

Considering the anticipated improvements, the Mini 4 may be priced slightly higher than its predecessor. The Mini 3 Pro sells for around $759 for the standard package. Given the expected upgrades, the Mini 4 might be priced around $850-$950 for the standard package, increasing for packages that include a more advanced controller and additional accessories.

Final Thoughts

The DJI Mini 4, if it follows DJI’s trend of innovative improvements, will further raise the bar in the consumer drone market. With the potential for an upgraded camera, improved obstacle avoidance system, extended transmission range, enhanced flight modes, and longer flight time, it is sure to be a huge hit when it is released.

However, as we have discussed in this article, the DJI Mini 4 will most likely be released early or in mid-2024, which is disappointing, but if you are looking to purchase a high-quality mini drone, the DJI Mini 3 Pro is the best in its class. Airsentinel.ai Launches Innovative Drone Detection App for Android

Drone detection can be a touchy subject in the commercial drone industry.  Rem0te ID for drones gives stakeholders the capability to identify unmanned aircraft and their pilots, helping reduce the risk of unauthorized drone incursions – thereby supporting the expansion of the legitimate commercial industry.  Some operators, however, are legitimately concerned that having pilot location and identification data made public could lead to unintended negative consequences.  Drone manufacturing leader DJI developed a solution that made drone detection as easy as possible for pilots in 2019, but was criticized when demonstrating their first drone detection app amid fears that the app provided too much information to too many people.

Airsentinel.ai is co-founded by Kenji Sugahara, a drone industry thought leader and the CEO of the Drone Service Providers Alliance, an operator-focused advocacy group.  Air Sentinel’s new drone detection app aims to meet the need for airspace security while respecting drone operators.  Sugahara points out that the app, designed to detect and provide remote identification data from drones in real-time, doesn’t reveal pilot locations to unregistered users.

“The Airsentinel.ai app responds to an ever-increasing demand for effective and user-friendly drone detection systems. It offers real-time drone activity tracking, paving the way for enhanced safety and security for individuals, businesses, and public safety agencies,” says the press release.

“We are thrilled to bring our innovative drone detection technology to the Android platform,” said Alan Erickson, co-CEO of Airsentinel.ai. “Our primary objective has been to democratize airspace security. With the launch of the Airsentinel.ai app on Google Play, we are taking a giant leap in that direction. It just works.”

The app uses sophisticated algorithms and advanced machine learning techniques to detect and identify drones. Once a drone is detected, the app provides users with critical information, including the drone’s digital license plate, location, and flight path. This app in concert with our cloud-based system will enable users to visualize drones across the national airspace system.

“Private companies can greatly benefit from our app by safeguarding their premises from unwanted drone intrusions, protecting intellectual property, and ensuring the security of their operations,” Erickson stated. “Public safety organizations and cities can also use the app to monitor and control drone activities in their jurisdictions, enhancing security and minimizing potential threats.”

The Airsentinel.ai app is available for free on the Google Play Store, with the option for in-app purchases to unlock additional features and capabilities.

The company is also celebrating 20 years – a major achievement in any industry.  DRONELIFE spoke with brothers Philippe and Louis Simard, the visionary team behind a mapping product used by most governments in the world, oil and gas conglomerates, and drone mapping operations of any size.

Philippe and Louis Simard aren’t twins, but they have followed each other’s footsteps closely.  Both have graduate degrees in Computer Vision from Magill, studying in the same lab.  It was in that lab that the Correlator3D platform was first conceived: a brand new idea for using the concepts of computer vision to generate accurate maps, quickly and easily.

Louis Simard is SimActive’s Chief Technology Officer, responsible for research and development.  Louis describes how the brothers developed their first product.

“We were really young, right out of college – and starting a company was a dream,” Louis says.  “We developed this technology to get 3D data from images.  Now, everybody does that, but in 2003 it was really new.  We weren’t even sure what we were going to do with it.”

The two found an application for their ideas in solving a significant problem: creating maps in the field, quickly and easily.  Using faster algorithms, they were able to create detailed maps in a fraction of the usual processing time.  It was an idea that met a major need for the Canadian army: in 2003, Canadian military agencies were mapping areas of Afghanistan to support US military operations.

“Using other products, it took [military agencies] months to train people, and then weeks to process the data,” Louis explains.

The brothers won a 5-year contract to develop a commercial software product with and for the agency.  “We didn’t know much about the mapping business,” Louis admits.  “Our first module was about 3D extraction, but the learning curve was pretty tough.”  Not only did the team have to figure out the existing mapping processes to identify the pain points, 20 years ago ecosystem tools like computer hardware and storage were far less powerful than they are today.  “It was so hard to get a powerful computer that could crunch the data,” said Louis.

By 2008, SimActive had an easy-to-use consumer product, which the Canadian army was happy to purchase. As the industry evolved, customers asked SimActive to meet new needs and new applications in mapping.  “We just addressed them one by one, releasing a new module every year,” says Louis.  “After about 7-10 years we had a really full suite.”

That step-by-step approach has influenced the development of the company ever since.  “We’ve been profitable since day one,” says Philippe Simard, SimActive CEO.  (“I make the promises, Louis keeps them,” jokes Philippe.)    From a customer base made up almost entirely of huge mapping companies using manned aircraft, the product has evolved to accommodate data from multiple sources like satellites and drones.  That flexibility has allowed SimActive to expand every year, self-funding and growing organically.

“Back  in 2003 the statistics were strongly against us,” says Philippe. “Only 10 out of 300 startups would make it for the first year, and only 1 out of 300 would make it 5 years.”

Twenty years on, SimActive has beaten the odds, and both the product and the company have continued to grow.  “Now, our revenue is almost doubling every year,” says Philippe. “The product has evolved quite a bit, and we’ve adapted our business models to accommodate many different clients – we can adapt to almost any need and any budget.  And we have a strong network of resellers.”

Based in Montreal, SimActive now supports a remote workforce, which Philippe says has been a great success.  “We’ve opened the doors to people internationally, which has made a big difference to our organization,” he says.  “It allows us to support our clients almost 24/7, with all of the different time zones covered.”

Celebrating their 20 year anniversary, SimActive and the Simard brothers are looking forward to the next 20.

“Both Louis and I share the same vision,” says Philippe.  “We’re having fun.  We’re surrounded by seasoned, senior people who are super bright, they’re fun to work with.

“We love what we do.  We want to keep pushing things.”

The New Release: Correlator 3D, v.10

“When it’s your birthday, you dress up – that’s what we did with our software,” says Louis.  “We’ve completely redesigned the interface to give customers that ‘Wow’ factor when they start it.

“The last time we did that was 5 or 6 years ago,” he explains.  “Changing everything in the interface is quite a challenge because you don’t want your legacy users to get lost.  This is something we really wanted to make sure was really nice, but was still aligned with what we’ve done in the past.”

Behind the interface, the software has also been redesigned to be even easier and more precise.

“It’s an engine that we’ve been thinking about it and developing for a few year,” says Louis.  “We’re using new techniques.”

“We extract high density point clouds where you can see very small details – in your final point cloud you’ll be able to actually read road signs,” he says.  “Computers are improving all the time too, so we have access to all that power: but we still want people to be able to use their drone in the field and use their laptop.”

The improvement in hardware and ecosystem tools over the last few years has made new things possible. “Especially from a drone perspective, sensors have evolved quite a bit, including oblique imagery,” says Philippe. “The new version is all about being able to profit from all of this redundant information to come up with better results.”

“I think we’re setting a new standard in terms of point clouds for our users,” says Louis. “We’re miles from what we started with 15 years ago.”

Horizon Aircraft completes wind tunnel transition flight testing

Horizon Aircraft (“Company” or “Horizon”), an innovative leader in hybrid electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aerial vehicles, announced today that it has successfully completed initial transition flight testing of its “Cavorite X5” 50% scale eVTOL prototype in the world-class ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel.

Brandon Robinson, CEO of Horizon Aircraft said: “Aircraft performance exceeded our expectations. We explored forward speeds of up to almost 100 km/h, measuring aerodynamic forces, control authority, and mechanical system function with the wings open at varying fan speeds. We were particularly happy with pitch and roll stability and control throughout the entire transition envelope, as well as the embedded fan performance. Having real-world test results match our detailed predictions was a further endorsement of our world-class engineering. We can now use these results to refine our CFD modelling and further de-risk the outdoor transition flight test program that is beginning soon.”

Horizon’s innovative and patented hybrid eVTOL concept allows the aircraft to fly 98% of its mission in a very low-drag configuration like a traditional aircraft and is one of the only eVTOL aircraft currently able to do so. Flying most of the mission as a normal aircraft is safer, more efficient, and will be easier to certify than radical new eVTOL designs. The unique aircraft can also operate in Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) or Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) modes.   • Demonstrable experience of project management, or similar support-function experience, in a fast-paced and rapidly changing aviation environment
  • Understanding the logistical requirements to support MALE RPAS deployment
  • Communication at all levels both internally and externally
  • In depth knowledge of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Operations
  • An emotionally intelligent, resilient, analytical, and motivated leader and team player with excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Risk and Safety Management experience
  • Experience in Bid-writing, Non-Disclosure Agreements and Contracts
  • Military RPAS pilot or Sensor Operator experience would be highly desirable
  • Good Microsoft Office skills
  • An advantage would be experience of writing Operating Safety Cases and achieving UK CAA Operational Authority for a Specified Category RPAS

In addition, applicants will have to prove automatic right to work in the UK, whilst holding or be eligible to obtain a UK security clearance.
