Natilus Selects ZeroAvia Hydrogen-Electric Engines for Zero-Emission Propulsion Cargo UAV

Natilus, an innovator in designing and developing new autonomous blended-wing body (BWB) cargo aircraft, and ZeroAvia, the leader in zero-emission commercial aviation, have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop hydrogen-electric engines for the Natilus Kona cargo UAV.

ZeroAvia’s ZA600 will be the sole hydrogen-electric propulsion source offered for the novel Kona short-haul feeder UAV, with the partnership focused on delivering zero-emission and lower cost operations.

The Natilus Kona, with its revolutionary BWB design, offers increased volume for hydrogen storage, potentially transforming the air cargo delivery industry to one with low-cost, low carbon emissions, while also extending flight range. The partnership with ZeroAvia will leverage their expertise in hydrogen-electric powertrain technology with Natilus’ unique design to create a scalable, long-range, and zero-emission air cargo delivery solution for the entire industry.

Natilus recently validated the performance of the BWB design with flight testing of a quarter-scale Kona prototype aircraft, following three years of extensive wind-tunnel testing, while ZeroAvia has now conducted eight test flights of its prototype ZA600, 600kW engine in a 19-seat testbed aircraft.

Aleksey Matyushev, Co-founder and CEO of Natilus, said:

“Natilus has a long-term commitment to being a responsible steward of our environment, instituting practices that can protect the environment through continual improvements to save fuel and water, reduce waste, air emissions, noise, and material consumption. The Natilus-ZeroAvia partnership goes further, bringing the talents and innovations of the two companies together to deliver much needed innovation in the air cargo delivery industry and multiple solutions for our customers.”

Val Miftakhov, Founder and CEO of ZeroAvia, said:

“Given Natilus’ impressive order book and corresponding technology development, working together on integrating the ZA600 as a line-fit engine for Kona can multiply the emissions and costs benefits that are already interesting cargo operators. We all depend on air cargo operators, and some communities depend on them absolutely, so improving the economics and environmental impacts of these operations while increasing service levels is a massive opportunity.”

ZeroAvia has demonstrated a prototype of the ZA600 with world-first flight testing of a retrofitted 19-seat aircraft in flight. The company has twice held the record for demonstrating the largest hydrogen fuel cell aircraft and has struck several important agreements with airframe OEMs relevant to ZA600 – including Textron Aviation, manufacturer of the Cessna Caravan, and private aircraft manufacturer Otto Aviation.

Natilus currently has more than $6.8 billion in order commitments, and 460+ aircraft in pre-orders, from companies including major airlines and integrators: Ameriflight, Volatus Aerospace, Flexport, Astral, Aurora International, and Dymond. The company is now working on construction of a full-scale Kona technology demonstrator, which will have a wingspan of 85 feet (26 meters).

Everdrone Honored as Top Innovator for Third Time, Receives Gold Company Designation

by DRONELIFE Staff Writer Ian M. Crosby

For the third time, autonomous drone technology leader Everdrone has made the list of Ny Teknik’s Top 33 Most Promising Tech Companies in Sweden. Everdrone’s First on Scene AED Solution utilizes autonomous drones to deliver defibrillators (AED) to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. The solution currently sees use in Sweden and Denmark, where it has served a total of 340,000 people.

“We are truly honoured to have made it onto the list not once, but three times, alongside giants like Spotify and iZettle”, said Everdrone CEO Mats Sällström. “We also hope that this sort of recognition brings awareness of how drones in general can be used to save lives and provide safety in society.”

Companies that achieve placement on Ny Teknik’s list three times receive the honor of being designated a Gold Company. In order for a company to be in consideration for the list, it needs to have been founded no longer than seven years ago and demonstrate the aptitude for international success through its technological innovations developed inhouse. The UN Sustainable Development Goals has also served as a further assessment criterion in the selection process in recent years.

Drones Deliver Defibrillators – What’s Next?

“For us, AEDs are just the beginning. We are presently widening the scope to deliver other time-sensitive medical supplies such as epinephrine and tourniquets,” added Sällström. “We are also expanding our service portfolio beyond medical delivery and will soon be able to provide live view imagery to support time-critical decision-making in case of fires or traffic accidents.”

LMT to attempt remote drone piloting across the continent in final Comp4Drones demonstration

Latvian mobile innovator, LMT, will attempt to pilot a drone located in Latvia from a 3500+ kilometers distance during the Comp4Drones final demonstration in Spain on October 19, 2022. This demonstration will be unique in the fact that a mobile network will be used as a communication channel for cross-country drone piloting, while network coverage forecasting and remote route validation will be ensured by AirborneRF.

The purpose of this demonstration is to test remote drone flights in areas where network coverage has not previously been measured on-site, instead relying on fully remote network forecasts. Such demonstrations are an attempt to explore future business possibilities for cellular network-connected drone technologies, as well as for network infrastructure providers, since these drones will become new equipment to use this infrastructure.

“Before the Comp4Drones demonstration in Spain, LMT has done extensive network measurements and compared the actual coverage data with the forecasted, validating the reliability and availability of the network in very-low level airspace (up to 120m). What we see from the findings is that the existing network configuration is sufficient for today’s needs, but the work on network capabilities must be continued as the number of drones and BVLOS (beyond the visual line of sight) flights will increase,” says Gints Jakovels, Innovation Lead at LMT.

The drone will be located in Latvia and piloted from the Rozas airport near Lugo, Spain. During the flight, those present will be able to observe the AirborneRF network forecast and actual network parameters during the flight, as well as follow the flight on the map on the LMT Drone Park platform.

The flight will be conducted during the final demonstration of the Comp4Drones project, which aims to provide a framework of key enabling technologies for safe and autonomous drones. The project brings together a consortium of 51 partners from 8 countries.

LMT has previously successfully demonstrated drone flights BVLOS on the mobile network. For the first time in the region, such a demonstration was conducted in 2019 during the 5G Techritory forum in Riga, when a drone located 30 kilometres away in Ādaži was piloted remotely and switched from one base station to another en route.

Exodigo digs up $29 Million in seed funding to make underground mapping nonintrusive - sUAS News - The Business of Drones
Exodigo digs up $29 Million in seed funding to make underground mapping nonintrusive – sUAS News – The Business of Drones

Exodigo, a technology innovator combining the power of proprietary advances in 3D imaging, sensors and artificial intelligence (AI), today announced the commercial availability of its groundbreaking nonintrusive subterranean mapping platform for construction, mining and utility companies in the United States and Israel. The company also announced raising $29M in seed funding led by Zeev Ventures and 10D Ventures, with participation from SquarePeg Capital and JIBE Ventures. Strategic industry leaders Tidhar Construction, Israel Canada and WXG Ltd. also joined the round.

“Traditional underground discovery techniques are grossly outdated and incredibly inaccurate. Exodigo is the future of underground mapping. Led by a team with unequaled experience, Exodigo will solve costly, and at times devastatingly catastrophic, problems that have plagued developers and engineers for decades,” said Gil Geva, CEO of Tidhar Construction.

Every year, Exodigo estimates that more than $100B is spent on unnecessary excavation and drilling to discover what lies underground in an attempt to avoid hitting gas pipelines, water sources, oil, and other potential hazards hidden beneath the surface. The constant use of heavy equipment creates avoidable greenhouse gas emissions, wastes billions of dollars per year, damages our planet, and causes spills and explosions that can cost lives. As an example, the Common Ground Alliance estimates $30B in societal costs resulting from damages to critical U.S. underground infrastructure each year. Carried by drones or small carts, the Exodigo sensor system effectively provides 3D subsurface imaging that eliminates the need for exploratory excavation and powers smart drilling and sustainable operations by derisking the discovery process across industries. Watch the video here.

“Offering next-generation noninvasive subsurface imaging, Exodigo delivers precise and complete data faster than other solutions,” noted Asaf Touchmair, owner and chairman of the board, Israel Canada, the leading development group in Israel. “Exodigo can help businesses avoid unexpected consequences like spills and explosions that cost millions of dollars each year and lost time accidents.”

Exodigo can rapidly create a digital geolocated, 3D map of buried assets – from man-made pipes and cables to soil layers, rocks, minerals, and even groundwater across any terrain. In its first live demonstration, Exodigo proved its ability to safely and accurately identify underground utilities, abandoned lines, and ground layers in a remote, unmapped area. Watch the video for an inside look at feedback from strategic partners and utilities in Israel about how this revolution in underground mapping can inform better business decisions.

“It is time to finally break ground on a safer, more sustainable and infinitely more precise method for subterranean discovery. Our powerful combination of advanced sensor technologies and proprietary AI platform provides users with a safe, fast way to get a complete view of what lies beneath the surface with unprecedented precision,” added Jeremy Suard, co-founder and CEO of Exodigo. “Ending the era of blind digs, Exodigo gives companies an accurate, easy-to-understand map of what lies beneath the surface – empowering their teams to save time, money, and lives. Think of it like combining the scanning power of an MRI, CT scan and ultrasound all into one image of what is beneath the ground.”

Exodigo will commence pilot projects in California, Florida and Texas in the weeks ahead. The company plans to use the funding to accelerate its expansion, with a focus on building a California-based team to support the commercial rollout in the United States. Yahal Zilka of 10D and Oren Zeev of Zeev Ventures have joined the Board of Directors to provide continued support and speed Exodigo’s market penetration by making critical connections throughout their extensive industry networks.

Additional Investor Commentary:

–  “The Exodigo team has a huge potential and the right passion and background to solve the complicated problem ahead of them. They are building a great company with elite personnel, and that is why I chose to co-lead their seed investment,” said Oren Zeev, founding partner, Zeev Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm.
–  “Upon meeting the exceptional Exodigo team, we quickly realized and understood their unique domain expertise that to the best of our knowledge is non-existent anywhere in the world. The company is positioned to create a totally new category with its nonintrusive subsurface mapping,” said Yahal Zilka, managing partner at 10D. “This was clearly a competitive deal, and we are privileged to have been chosen alongside Zeev Ventures as their investment partner.”
–  “Opening up visibility to what’s underground is a new superpower that will help organizations save billions, while also significantly reducing environmental damage. The combination of the two makes Exodigo a fascinating company, and I’m so excited to support such a powerful team on this kind of journey,” added Philippe Schwartz, managing partner at SquarePeg.
